Memorial Day, this coming Monday the 26th, of May, is a federal holiday observed in the United States with deep roots dating back to the aftermath of the Civil War. Initially known as Decoration Day, it was established to honor the Union soldiers who died in the Civil War. The first official observance of Memorial Day took place on May 30, 1868, when General John A. Logan, leader of a veterans’ organization, called for a day to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers. This act of remembrance quickly gained traction, and by the 20th century, it was being celebrated nationwide.
In 1971, Memorial Day was officially declared a national holiday and is now observed on the last Monday of May. The significance of this day has evolved, as it now honors all Americans who have died while defending their country in military service. Parades, memorial services, and the decoration of gravesites have become hallmark traditions. In many communities, people gather at cemeteries to pay their respects, laying down wreaths and flags on graves, especially in military cemeteries such as Arlington National Cemetery.
In addition to solemn observances, Memorial Day also marks the unofficial beginning of summer for many Americans. Families and friends take advantage of the long weekend with backyard barbecues, picnics, and games.
