Why You Should Start Loving Leeks

Why You Should Start Loving Leeks

While you may not know leeks by name, chances are you’ve already eaten and enjoyed them without even realizing it! Leeks are part of the genus Allium, one it shares with related onion, garlic, shallot, scallion, chive, and Chinese onion. They have a mild onion-like flavor, and in its raw form a crunchy texture similar to a green onion. While they look a bit similar to a green onion, and they’re similar in texture, leeks are much larger and feature a slightly milder and sweeter flavor. Knowing a little bit more about leeks, you’ll likely begin noticing them more when they’re in your favorite dishes.

At SoLé SoupS®, leeks are a favorite ingredient of ours in our homemade soups. They provide great texture and flavor, but they also add some nutritional benefit as well. Some of our favorite benefits of leeks include:

  • Filled with healthy carbohydrates – Carbohydrates are good for the body, they help to provide us with energy and they’re a necessity in a healthy diet. However, not all carbs are created equal, and the type you’re looking for are the natural and complex carbs the body knows how to work with. One medium-sized leek contains around 10 to 12 grams of healthy natural carbohydrates.
  • Great source of fiber – Fiber is necessary for digestion, and too many Americans don’t receive enough fiber in their diets on a day to day basis. Leeks are a great source of fiber, giving you what you need to digest your food in a healthy way while helping you to feel fuller for longer.
  • Packed full of vitamins – The body needs a number of vitamins each day to run at its best, and leeks are an excellent source of vitamins K, C, and B6. The vitamin C found in leeks is essential for keeping a healthy immune system. The vitamin K is essential for bone health, and 1 cup of leeks contains a whopping 42 micrograms of vitamin K, or 34 to 47% of your daily recommended intake.

Leeks provide texture, flavor, and quite a bit of nutritional value to any dish they’re prepared with. Our homemade soups at SoLé SoupS® use leeks and a myriad of other healthy ingredients, each handpicked for their nutritional value and the incredible flavors they provide to every dish.
