Where Did Agoura Hills Get its Name?

Where Did Agoura Hills Get its Name?

At SoLé Soups, our Premium | Gourmet Soups, Sauces & More are fresh-made daily under the warm Southern California sun; we use fresh natural [and local] ingredients.  Since our  Premium | Gourmet Soup StudioTM located in beautiful Agoura Hills is part of where we call home, we wanted to learn/ share a little bit about it.

During the early 1900’ s the area was being used as a stagecoach stop known as “Vejar Junction”. It served as a popular stop along the Camino Real due to a natural spring at the foothills of Ladyface Mountain.

The name eventually changed to “Picture City” a few decades after Paramount Pictures purchased a ranch in the community that was used for filming Western movies. Today you can still hike and horseback ride through Paramount Ranch and even see some of the old movie sets that still exist today.

As more people began moving into the area, new residents were in search of a Post Office. They were informed by the Postal Service that in order to attain status for actual Post Office, they would need to submit a list of names for their town.

It happened that a gentleman named Pierre Agoure, a French immigrant who had been in the region since as far back as 1871 was a lively landowner with the reputation of being a sort of swashbuckler, and styling himself ‘ Don Pedro Agoure. This name of his, “Agoure” was submitted on the requested list to the Postal Service. The name ended up being selected because it happened to be the shortest on the list- although no one quite knows how its spelling was changed from ending in an ‘ e’  to ending in an ‘ a’…Was it done by preference? For suitability? …or could it have been a simple error?

Agoura Hills received cityhood in 1982.  The vote made Agoura Hills the 83rd City in Los Angeles County, and one that is commonly known as the “Gateway to the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.”

We’ re glad to be here and glad to invite you here as well! We look forward to sharing our healthy & delicious products with you & your family. Come enjoy SoLé Soups today.
